A time of anticipation about visiting family, sharing generous Christmas meals together and exchanging gifts. But this year is different. COVID-19 has meant changes to jobs and businesses, changes to schooling arrangements, travel restrictions, heightened hygiene awareness, particularly for those involved in health care, and changes to major events such as weddings and funerals. All this change has brought with it a good deal of anxiety, and the last thing needed is additional pressure at Christmas to make matters worse.
\nHere are some ideas that people have found helpful in terms of lessening financial and relationship pressures at Christmas time:
\nThe secret to having a peaceful, stress-less Christmas is to plan ahead of time. We might only be in November, but it is time to get those thinking caps on to lessen the pressure. Our local charity shops include:

What’s an activity that the whole family can get involved in? One that doesn’t cost the earth? One that helps everyone prepare for the joy that is Christmas?\nMaking bread dough Christmas ornaments! Traditionally crafted in German and Scandinavian countries, these ornaments offer creativity and longevity. Here are the basics:
\nDough:
\n225gms plain flour\n100gms plain, white salt\n2 teaspoons cooking oil\n100 mls water.
Stir the flour and salt together before adding the oil and water. Mix dough with your hands, adding extra drops of water if need be (the dough should be firm enough not to stick to your hands but not so dry that it is crumbly).\nTurn dough out onto a smooth surface and knead for at least 10 minutes, until it is smooth, pliable, and slightly warm.
\nTo make a small wreath ornament for a Christmas tree:
\nMake two sausage shapes of dough, approximately 20 cms long and 1 cm thick. Lay them side by side. Starting in the centre, twist them around each other, continue gently twisting – working outwards, first to one end and then to the other. Seal the ends of the twist and bring them together to make a small wreath. Cut out some dough into holly leaves and berries and adhere to the top of the wreath by lightly wetting the back of the shapes with water. Place onto a baking sheet covered in baking paper.
To make a hook to hang the wreath from a Christmas tree, use pliers to cut off the ends of a bobby pin so that all you are left with is the “U” with prongs around 1.5 cm in length. Stick this hook into the top of the bread dough wreath so there is enough room to thread ribbon through once it is baked and cooled.\nCook the wreath at 145o C for 90 minutes. Cool completely before painting the leaves and berries with paint (ordinary children’s paints will do), before spraying with clear Estapol.

Natalie Tanchevski is a volunteer for the Canberra Salvation Army. Last Christmas year she started a little fundraiser for her local Gungahlin Salvos called $100 for 100 Families. She was raising money to purchase $100 grocery gift cards to give to struggling families that were registered for Christmas assistance. It was a big success and she ended up raising $16,500 in 3 weeks.
\nThis year, given the impact of corona virus, she decided she wanted to try and help more families and not just in her local area of Gungahlin. She has expanded the fundraiser to help 1000 families across Canberra, Queanbeyan, Yass, Cooma and Goulburn. The fundraiser is called Hundreds For Thousands. Raising $100 for 1000 Families in need ($100,000). All the money raised goes directly to a local Salvation Army centre and will be used to purchase $100 grocery gift cards to give to the families in need in the lead up to Christmas.
\nThere are 10 Salvo centres involved, Goulburn is one of them, each with a goal of raising $10,000 to help 100 families in their local area. The public have the choice to choose which centre they want to donate to when they visit their online fundraising platform www.hundredsforthousands.salvationarmy.org.au
