Last week Fortem Australia announced its Transition & Employment Program for national security and law enforcement personnel seeking a career change.
\n“We know that transitioning out of service can be a challenge, and often comes on the back of a career that has involved trauma. Our approach is very mindful of the range of emotions and needs that come at this point in someone’s life,” said John Bale, Managing Director, Fortem Australia.
\nFortem’s well established wellbeing activities and clinical support are a cornerstone of the Transition & Employment Program and point to a holistic approach to mental fitness.
\n“Our Transition Engagement Officers come with lived experience and their own background with a variety of first responder agencies, they have all travelled the career transition path.
\n“This program and the people who drive it will honour service and recognise the ongoing and unique capabilities of national security and law enforcement personnel,” Mr Bale said.
\nLaunched by the Minister for Home Affairs, the Hon. Karen Andrews MP, at a virtual ceremony from Parliament House in Canberra, the program will work with agencies and with first responders themselves, to provide support, coaching, and guidance.
\n“Australians are rightly proud of the service of those who protect us each and every day from terrorism, violent extremism, child sexual exploitation, organised crime, people smuggling, human trafficking, and a range of other threats,” Minister Andrews said.
\n“These aren’t ordinary jobs – they can take a toll on individuals and their families – so it’s only right that we take action to protect the people that protect Australia, and who keep us all safe.”
\nFortem’s Transition & Employment Program is supported by $1.9 million in Commonwealth Government funding to establish a pilot program to support the healthy, positive and timely transition of those national security and law enforcement personnel, leaving service.
\nFortem is working towards extending its Transition & Employment Program to everyone in the first responder community soon, incorporating state-based emergency agencies.

\nAn extra 60 short courses are now on offer to study for free.
\nMinister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said, “We know there is great demand for training at the moment, which is why we have added additional free courses and more training places so people can come out of lockdown with skills they can take with them into the workplace.”\nMr Lee went on to explain, “The free courses are available to anyone across the State who is unable to work due to public health orders. We have specifically targeted those LGAs and suburbs in lockdown and are working with local communities and industry to understand what skills are in demand and where shortages exist.”
\nThe training is being funded through the JobTrainer program, which has already seen more than 120,000 people in NSW skill up since it was announced in October last year. \nThe project, led by UOW’s iAccelerate, will deliver education programs to support 90 of the most promising entrepreneurs and business owners in bushfire affected areas to create 300 new jobs.
\nGoulburn Mulwaree is one of six local government areas to be included in the program, after engaging with iAccelerate and providing a letter of support for the application. The program is also being rolled out in the Bega Valley Shire, Eurobodalla Shire, Queanbeyan-Palerang, Snowy Monaro, Wingecarribee Shire, as well as four Local Aboriginal Land Councils.
\n“This is very exciting news for the businesses and entrepreneurs of our region, who will be able to tap into the brilliant programs and experience offered by iAccelerate to help them take the next step” said Mayor Bob Kirk, who went on to say that the model has already delivered strong results in regional NSW through the Bega Valley Innovation Hub.
\nChris Petersilge, iAccelerate Ecosystem Evangelist said that in addition to increasing economic resilience, the program will also help to keep young people in the regions by providing employment and business opportunities.
\n“Having launched the Bega Valley Innovation Hub in NSW’s far South Coast, iAccelerate is familiar with the challenges and opportunities faced with supporting regional entrepreneurs. With over a decade of creating new industries and over 700 jobs in Wollongong, we’re ready to bring this model created in the Bega Valley to more bushfire-affected areas.”
\nUOW Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor Jennifer L Martin congratulated the iAccelerate team on the announcement, saying, “UOW continues to foster innovation through providing leading entrepreneurial education programs. I look forward to seeing the roll out of the iAccelerate Activate program to bushfire-affected areas to create new jobs in the regions”.

\nJobSaver payments will now be available to businesses with an annual turnover of between $75,000 and $250 million, up from $50 million, which have experienced a revenue decline of 30 per cent or more.
\nThe maximum weekly payment has also been substantially increased, with employing businesses that maintain their employee headcount able receive between $1,500 and $100,000 per week, up from $10,000, with payments based on 40 per cent of their weekly NSW payroll.
\nNSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the additional support would help deliver businesses and individuals the financial assistance needed during the necessary extension of the lockdown.
\nApplications for JobSaver opened last Monday with more than 14,000 applications received by the end of the week and almost $28 million approved for payment so far.\nPayments are expected to be received promptly. Businesses can expect to receive funds within five to ten business days from their approval date, and the arrangements will be backdated, so businesses that have already received a first payment on previous settings will be topped up when their next payment is made.
\nJobSaver payments are available from week four of the lockdown. Non-employing business remain eligible for a maximum of $1,000 per week.
\nBusinesses in lockdown areas have also received support from the 2021 COVID-19 Business Grant to cover the first three weeks of lockdown, with more than $118 million has been paid to businesses so far from more than 56,000 applications received.

\nMember for Goulburn, Wendy Tuckerman said this is a major win for the local community. “This investment forms part of a $20 million initiative to build 200 high-tech, modern learning spaces to support virtual learning across TAFE NSW campuses by May 2022,” Mrs Tuckerman said, adding that the initiative will expand and enhance access to training, allowing more students to live and learn in their own communities.
\nThe investment will be used to integrate physical, digital, and virtual learning environments across New South Wales. TAFE NSW campuses at Goulburn, Moss Vale, and Yass will be fitted with four state-of-the art digitally enabled learning spaces, designed to link local students with a state-wide network of industry qualified TAFE NSW teachers.
\nTAFE NSW Goulburn will also receive funding to install a virtual delivery space, designed to enable teachers and industry experts to train students located around the state via a virtual classroom. This will enable Goulburn-based teachers to share their highly sought-after industry experience with students irrespective of location.
\nAs part of the investment, a number of specialist facilities across NSW will be upgraded, including workshops, kitchens, and laboratories which will be fitted with technology and equipment to enable live practical demonstrations conducted in industry-standard and fully equipped teaching facilities.
\nMinister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said TAFE NSW is evolving to meet the changing learning needs of student and local communities, adding that this investment allows students to build skills highly valued by employers, such as digital literacy, remote working, problem-solving, and resilience.
\nConstruction of 200 connected facilities will commence in the coming months.

\nThe program is dedicated to growing skills and continued learning after school years have been completed, helping learners to experience independence, workplace success and community inclusion.
\nOpportunities are being offered to participants in the Goulburn Mulwaree Library, the workshop, parks & gardens, and the Visitor Information Centre. Council’s Human Resources team have undertaken a significant amount of work to link Right to Work with different departments for opportunities.
\nMayor Bob Kirk said it was wonderful to see the organisation responding to a need to offer better opportunities to young people with disability.
\n“Many of these young adults have never had opportunities to undertake work experience, so it’s great to be able to do this through Council where do such a wide variety of different work.”

\nThe Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements wage subsidy program is fully subscribed, helping to create 100,000 apprenticeships in less than five months.
\nThe Program will now become demand-driven and expanded for a full 12 months for new apprentices and trainees signed up before 30 September 2021.
\nIt is estimated that this demand-driven expansion will generate around 70,000 new apprentice and trainee places, with the Government investing around $1.2 billion.
\nFederal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said that the BAC has already supported 545 apprentices and trainees in the Hume electorate.
\n“With a 50% wage subsidy for 12 months on offer for your business, there has never been a better time to sign up an apprentice,” Mr Taylor said.
\n“The Boosting Apprentices Commencement program has to date assisted almost 40,000 businesses to take on a new Australian apprentice or trainee.”
\n“By expanding this wage subsidy for another 12 months, we’ll be helping local businesses to create even more jobs.”
\nThe Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements was one of the COVID-19 skills measures announced as part of the $4 billion in apprentice wage subsidies.
\nThe Morrison Government is providing record levels of support to the vocational education and training sector in 2020-21, which is not only helping rebuild our economy but preparing for the future.
\nThis includes the $1 billion JobTrainer Fund supporting more than 300,000 additional free or low-fee training places for job seekers and young people.
\nWe have also funded the National Skills Commission, which harnesses contemporary data with labour market analysis to find the skills needs of the economy that, in turn, informs the qualifications and skills Australians need to train for.
\nThe Budget also provided funding for the National Careers Institute, which provides future apprentices, trainees and Australians looking to reskill or upskill with the information and support they need to take the next step in the career.
