\nThe concept for the opening exhibition grew out of the significance of the original WWI war trophy collection.
\n“The decision was taken to centre the exhibition around 16 objects of national significance from the WW1 collection housed onsite since 1927. The objects were further researched, contextualised and re-interpreted to tell the history of the museum, of the collection and of the surrounding community to showcase the new exhibition space” said the Museum’s Coordinator and exhibition curator, Kerry Ross.
\nThrough re-interpretation that articulates the connections between people, place and objects over a period of 90+ years, the exhibition delivers a meaningful experience that has re-engaged the local community and attracted new audiences to this important regional collection.
\nWhilst the museum is currently closed due to COVID restrictions, the museum’s team is working behind the scenes to deliver a new exhibition in 2022 based on local experiences of WWII.
\nThe exhibition will feature both war time service personnel and the experiences of those who lived through the war years In Goulburn and surrounding districts.

\nAs part of Biodiversity Month, Goulburn Mulwaree Council is undertaking a campaign to remind the community of the rules and regulations around land clearing, and the responsibility we all have to preserve native vegetation.
\nNative vegetation is protected by a variety of legislative instruments and penalties apply if you clear without approval.
\nDepending on where your property is located, and the clearing you would like to undertake, you will need to consult with Local Land Services or Council.
\nIf you are clearing vegetation for agricultural purposes on rural zoned land, you will need to consult with Local Land Services. For all other clearing you will need to consult with Council.
\n“There may be a number of reasons you are looking to undertake clearing, but it’s important you come and speak with Council staff or Local Land Services prior to doing so,” said Mayor Bob Kirk.
\n“We have had cases recently of people claiming they were told by real estate agents, developers or other industry stakeholders that clearing was okay, but it’s important that you speak with us first. Although some exemptions may apply, typically approval is necessary.”
\nNative vegetation is well defined within the Local Land Services Act 2013 and includes: trees (including any sapling or shrub), understorey plants, groundcover (being any type of herbaceous vegetation), and plants occurring in a wetland.
\nMany people do not know that native grasses are included under the definition of vegetation and cannot be cleared without approval.

Steampunk is a fun artistic movement that blends the classical Victorian era with industrial progress. There are steampunk movies, music, costumes and festivals and the commonality between them all is that they portray steam, pipes, tubes, gears, advanced mechanised accessories, and devices.
\nSadly, but not surprisingly, the Goulburn Mulwaree Council have decided to postpone Goulburn’s Steampunk Victoriana Fair, which was due to be held this October, due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.
\nThe event will now be held between the 11th – 13th March 2022.
\nMayor Bob Kirk explained, “Unfortunately with the case numbers still growing in NSW it is just not feasible to continue the planning work for Steampunk. The event attracts people from right around NSW and from as far as Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory, and at the moment it is hard to see the borders being open by early October.”
\nJulianne Salway, Council’s Museums Officer and the event coordinator for Steampunk Victoriana Fair, said “We’re very disappointed not to be able to hold the event as planned this year, but we are pleased we have only had to postpone until March 2022 which is not too far away.
\n“I hope that we will get the same stallholders and performers back in March, and by then will be able to welcome people from around Australia once again.”

\nJohn Bale, Managing Director, of Fortem Australia, explained “The pandemic is adding further pressure [to first responders and their families], and a recent survey of 1500 first responders by Charles Sturt University showed rates of severe depression and anxiety was 10 and 4 times higher, respectively, than the general population,” Mr Bale said.
Beyond Duty aims to create a stronger focus on the family and social networks of emergency service workers, highlighting the protective influence that strengthening these bonds can have.

\n• Graham Ashton and Dr Liz Sutton: Graham is the former Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police, Liz is a Research Fellow at Monash University. For the first time they will reflect on their 25-year lived experience as a first responder family – the positive and negative and what they learnt along the way about the wellbeing needs of their community during and post service.
\n• Dr David Lawrence, from the University of Western Australia. David will share the lessons learned from the “Answering the Call’ and ‘After the Fires’ research, focusing on the importance of workplace culture, family and community in supporting the wellbeing of emergency services personnel.
\n• Panel Discussion: Suicide in the First Responder Community: Lived Experience, Risk Factors and Prevention. These people might not be visible on our streets because they are “couch surfing”, or living in emergency accommodation, or sleeping in their cars.
\nHomelessness Week, which runs each year from 1st August – 7th August each year, aims to raise awareness of the impact of homelessness on Australia with national and local community events, focusing on the importance of housing as a solution and educating communities on how they can make a difference.
\nOver the past 11 years, annual event CafeSmart, which is conducted by homeless charity StreetSmart Australia, has raised and distributed over $1.5 million to over 1,000 local projects by bringing together local café businesses and coffee drinkers, to help vulnerable people in their neighbourhood.
\nThe COVID-19 pandemic has sadly highlighted the critical role CafeSmart funding plays in supporting charities that provide essential services to homeless Australians. During the past 18 months, many people have sought help from charities for the first time ever, many of whom had no knowledge of the community sector, leaving many organisations overwhelmed. The sector also provided a safety net for many with no income due to eligibility for income support.
\nThrough CafeSmart, locally raised donations are pooled and directed back into local homeless charities delivering frontline services, many of which have little public funding to sustain their work. These are services that are providing hot meals, putting roofs over people’s heads, and working hard towards long term solutions to the crisis.

\nMember for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman said the $200,000 NSW Seniors Festival Grants Program supports initiatives that encourage people aged 60 or over to stay healthy, engaged and active.
\n“This is an opportunity to celebrate or build on the diverse skills and interests of seniors in our community in areas like art, sport, health or technology,” Mrs Tuckerman said, adding, “The 2021 NSW Seniors Festival included e-safety sessions, drumming circles, movie nights and gardening workshops, and I’d like to see local groups come up with more creative and fun activities for the 2022 festival.”
\nLocal councils, community groups and not-for-profit organisations are among those who can apply for grants of up to $10,000 with a focus on COVID-safe activities and programs.
\nAs we know, COVID-19 has meant an increase in social isolation for people of all ages, and seniors are no exception. It’s therefore very important to get on board with programs that unite people.

It was established in 1951 and has occurred annually, every October long weekend ever since, albeit digitally in 2020 due to the advent of COVID-19.
\nThe following timeline outlines the plans (all being well) for the festival this October 2021:
\n• Friday the 1st brings the Lilac Lights Carnival to life.
\n• Saturday the 2nd starts with the opening ceremony, markets, live music in the rotunda in Belmore Park along with a memorabilia display and a “Trace Your Ancestors” stall. The Lilac Prince, Princess and Baby are announced along with the crowning of the new Lilac Queen. The ringing of the bells takes place at St Saviour’s Cathedral, being heard town wide. A quilt fair is held at the Soldiers Club and a family bush dance concludes the day.
\n• Sunday the 3rd consists of markets, a church service, parade, live music, puppet show, bell ringing, open garden and CWA afternoon tea.
\n• Monday the 4th wraps the weekend long celebration with markets, a fun run and bike ride, live music and the prestigious pet parade.
\nBut it’s the entrants to the Lilac Queen, Prince, Princess and Baby categories we are interested in this week. Entrants into these contests raise thousands of dollars for local charities, and their hard-earned contributions to our community are greatly appreciated. Here is a chance to try something a little different. This event is online, which is perfect for these challenging times.
\nEach week, for one month, participants will be sent clues by different feltmakers for making wild and wacky beads (or at least small felted objects that can hang from a string) for a statement-piece necklace. The clues will include short videos demonstrating techniques or written notes and photos. Participants will be able to ask questions if anything needs extra explaining. There are no set times. Participants can work on the project when it is convenient to them.
\nWhile these clues will take felt-makers through the overall process, there will also be the opportunity to use personal design creativity.
\nThe profits from CAFG will be provided to the organisers of the Southern Hemisphere Feltmakers Convergence to help fund an upcoming event in Canberra in 2023.
