After a disheartening year for the theatre in 2020 where productions were cancelled, the Lieder Theatre has started this year with a bang.
Its recent production of “Blackbird” by the Scottish playwright, David Harrower, was a notable success. Dealing with the difficult subject of child/adult sexual relations it was directed and performed with a clear understanding of the emotional trauma and ruined lives of the main characters, Una and Ray. The brilliant writing and excellent performances kept us on the edge of our seats with the twists and turns and depth of the story as it unfolded. We were extremely glad to have seen the final performance of the play. Accolades must go to director Chrisjohn Hancock and the production team, Courtney McKenzie as Una, Ryan Paranthoiene as Ray and young Lily McKellar.
Lieder Theatre was also recognised for its excellent work with the Mighty Playwrights Program, run by Goulburn Mulwaree Library, which won the recent Australia Day Goulburn Council award for the Event of the Year. The theatre company took the final scripts produced by the young playwrights and their mentors and turned them into wonderful stage productions.
The next Lieder production will be “Motherhood, the Musical” directed by Hannah Cotton and Marianne Powles from 3rd March until 23 March 2021.
The Lieder production in April is a new play by a local playwright about a heroine from our Colonial history. Local women’s stories of survival will also be attached to this production.
