Tamara Dean - Immersion 2021

Tamara Dean - Immersion 2021

Gallery 2: Tamara Dean - Tamara Dean is an Australian artist working in the fields of photography, installation and video. Her work explores the relationship between humans and the natural world. For as long as she can remember, Dean has yearned to be in nature. Whenever she enters a forest, she feels as though she has come home. This deep love of nature informs the artist’s life and her art practice. Dean was the winner of the 2020 Goulburn Art Award. Exhibiting in Gallery 2, Dean presents a new single channel video work entitled ‘Immersion’, 2021. Tamara Dean is represented by Michael Reid Sydney + Berlin.

The Window - Curated by Steven Hartup - This edition of The Window has been curated by Steven Hartup. Steven Hartup is a photographer based in Tarago, working across large format film and producing silver gelatin prints. Influenced by the likes of Jon Lewis, Ingeborg Tyssen and Stephen Dupont, Hartup states that photography is ‘at its best when it is an intense visual language which does not require a dense, complex shield of written language to explain or justify it.’ Hartup uses his camera to document and relish the details of the rural structures he has encountered in his life. With works in the Gallery’s permanent collection and exhibited in ‘Woolaway’ 2005 and ‘Goulburn Bustle’ 2019, we eagerly anticipate his curatorial choice for The Window.

David Ryrie – Otherwise Arbitrary Moments Exhibition

David Ryrie – Otherwise Arbitrary Moments Exhibition

Otherwise Arbitrary Moments - David Ryrie – The artistic practice of David Ryrie is resonant of the encounter at its most bare and honest. ‘Otherwise arbitrary moments’ is an exhibition of new work that pairs these seemingly ordinary encounters with the question of human scale. Preserving an array of moments through large scale photography, Ryrie posits our grown and assumed relationship to things as fluid, changeable and dreamlike. Just as we may recall an event or a fleeting moment in a new way each time we remember it, these images offer new detail and revelations at each viewing.

With great sensitivity to the physical world and photography’s uncanny ability to level the ontological plain of objects, Ryrie shifts our understanding of the value of things. Expanding scale and turning proportion, the banal is made poignant, while the familiar is drawn out long enough to unnerve and arrest. This exhibition sees Ryrie present large-scale images working in tandem on the viewer as installation and is his first major solo at the Gallery.

Ryrie was a finalist in the Olive Cotton Award in 2017, Winner of the People’s Choice, Goulburn Art Award in 2020. His work is held in the Macquarie Group and Australian Club collections as well as significant private collections.
