Agricultural shows have been part of the Australian landscape since the mid-1800s, and have enabled communities to come together and show the best that farming families have to offer – including cattle, sheep, tasty treats from the kitchen, flowers, poultry, and wool. At first, they were held in open paddocks with nothing but trees for shade. Since then, pavilions and sheds have appeared on the landscape, and sometimes these structures haven’t been updated since they were built.

Recently the Goulburn Show Society and other users of the Goulburn Recreation Area were delighted to see the completion of updates at the Recreation Area, which included an upgrade of the Peden Pavilion (including significant electrical work, along with upgrading the public toilets which were decades old), an all-weather cover over the livestock yards, and installation of a 15MW solar system on the Grace-Millsom Function Centre. Mayor Bob Kirk said the upgrades were welcomed by the community, and will provide a huge benefit to all users of the Recreation Area.

“Upgrades will make life much easier for the Goulburn Show Society, but also improve the use of the space for emergencies when we need to have livestock at the Recreation Area,” he said.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council was also successful in phase one of the NSW Government Showgrounds Stimulus Funding Program, receiving $446,744 to install new retractable basketball hoops, resealing the Gate 3 car park next to the Veolia Area and purchasing five mobile tiered seating units for use in the Veolia Arena.
