Peer reading program produces results

The Goulburn Mulwaree Library’s peer reading program is producing results, improving the literacy skills of many children and helping to foster a love of reading.

The program began in October and consists of trained peer leaders who act as mentors and motivators to peer readers. During each session, the peer reader is guided to select an appropriate book to read and have a one-on-one, read aloud session to practice reading techniques previously learnt.

Melissa McKellar, a parent of Ryleigh who participates as a mentor in the program, has found the program to be a huge benefit and success.

“Ryleigh has thoroughly enjoyed being a mentor in the Goulburn Mulwaree Library’s peer reading program. Her own self-confidence has grown tremendously, and she has made some wonderful new relationships.”

“Ryleigh has really enjoyed watching the success and growth of the readers who she has mentored. It’s been wonderful to see her develop a sense of pride in what she has helped them to achieve and for participating in a program that supports her local community.”

Peer leaders undergo a training session at the beginning of a 10-week program, and another midway through. The program has benefits for all participants; in addition to improvement of literacy skills we have seen improved confidence and social skills. For the teenagers involved as a peer leader it is a wonderful opportunity to develop their leadership skills.
